At the invitation of Angela Hollandsworth, Head of the MGUH Nursing Practice Council and Mary-Michael Brown, VP of Nursing Practice Innovation for MedStar Health, I participated in the Medstar Nursing Practice Council Meeting held in Columbia, MD this August. I was happy to contribute to the meeting and spoke briefly about various electronic resources, including the two most important databases for nursing professionals:
1.) CINAHL, the premier nursing database which indexes the major nursing and allied health journals, and
2.) MEDLINE, the world’s foremost medical database produced by the National Library of Medicine, which provides access to millions of citations and abstracts from the biomedical literature.
In addition to providing search tips for locating information in CINAHL, MEDLINE, Nursing Consult and on the web, I demonstrated the importance of using appropriate terms and phrases to return the most relevant search results. For example, a search using the word “recommendations” is very effective when searching for guidelines. Also, searching a variety of terms and synonyms related to a search topic is necessary to get the best results.
I was gratified by the warm reception and interest shown by the Council members at the meeting, and I hope to participate in future meetings. In the meantime, I will be attending the monthly MGUH Nursing Practice Council meetings held on the second Tuesday of each month at Georgetown. During these meetings I will help the Council with their reviews of the literature so they can formulate evidence-based practice guidelines for MGUH.
